What a week!

We returned from our relaxing vacation last Saturday, gearing up for a busy week of Vacation Bible School, Katelyn's second birthday and month end at work for me.

Sunday started off great...church, lunch, nap for the girls...and I finished up some things for VBS (which started that night). Ava (who was fine that morning), woke up from her nap with a 104 temp so we gave her some Motrin and Doug stayed home with her while Kate and I went to church for a fun night of VBS (Kate had an absolute ball!). We didn't think much of the temp as Ava has always been prone to high temps and Motrin has always kept them in check...they usually only last 24 hours and then she's over it. That night she woke up with a croup cough (which she also always seems to get when coming down with a cold...nothing new to us) so we did the normal steam (you can also do cool air), a little more Motrin to get through the night and had plans to visit the pediatrician in the morning. In the past our pediatrician has been able to give her a steroid in the office to treat the croup, and in the past...she always to seems to be on the up and up just a few short hours later. Still...not stressing.

We got an appointment at 11 and although a bit lethargic and croupy, Ava's temp had gone down to 101 that morning and she was playing off and on as normal with her sis. I thought for sure we'd do our normal stint at the doc's office and she'd be back to herself in no time. But...by the time we got to the doctor's office, her temp had spiked to 104+, her breathing had gotten worse (stridor) and she didn't want to walk. After a breathing treatment that didn't help, the doctor thought it best to admit her. So...off to Children's we went.

It was not a fun 2 days, but a good 2 days as they made her better, and I can't tell you how thankful I am for smart and able doctors and nurses and medicine and care we have access to in this country! We are truly blessed with our current health care system. In the whole scheme of things, what Ava had was minor compared to ailments/diseases many children have to bare. But watching your kid who just wants to go home be poked with IV's, forcing her to do breathing treatments, x-rayed and attached to cords is heartbreaking to say the least. She was a brave little peanut though and made it through!

A few funny moments...after we first got admitted they took her into a "treatment room" where doctors and nurses ran her IV along with a few other treatments. Once everything had calmed down, a nurse brought her a pink girly Barbie probably thinking Ava would jump at the toy. When the nurse asked Ava..."want a Barbie?" Ava replied "No"...in a "are you crazy?" tone. After asking Ava a few more times if she would be interested in any other girly items (Ava still responding no)...they asked what she did like to play with. Ava said "choo-choo's" and with no trains available, she picked out a drum set instead (thanks Children's!). That's our Ava:-) She then proceeded to say..."I like Little Mermaid, Tinkerbell, Thomas and Blue's Clues." Must have felt she had to set the doctors straight.

On the second day, they finally let her eat. All she wanted was cheerios. As soon as they set those dry cheerios in front of her...she started shoveling them in like there was no tomorrow. She wouldn't even stop to talk or look up or even breath! That girl was focused on devouring her cheerios as quickly as possible! We knew she was feeling better then! Ava is getting better and better each day. She still has a "Minnie mouse" voice, and seems a little tight in her chest, but we know as with all things that aren't so fun...it will pass.
